Guidelines & Position Statements

The Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF) is the co-author of the 2015 Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) in North America and the Canadian leader in resuscitation science, education and training.

HSF is a founding member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), which in a rigorous five-year cycle, reviews evidence and science relating to resuscitation, culminating in a set of recommendations relating to training and practice.

Our job, as the only Canadian member of ILCOR, is to bring together and support Canadian subject matter experts who join experts from around the globe in this review process. We then examine the ILCOR recommendations and (taking into account the unique Canadian health system and regulatory environment) collaborate on and co-author Resuscitation and First aid guidelines for North America. These guidelines are then adopted by agencies and form the basis of educational programs and clinical practice. The Guidelines are updated every 5 years, when evidence is clear that changes will improve survival rates. The Heart and Stroke Foundation will release the new guidelines in October 2015, followed by a range of instructional resources created specifically for the Canadian setting and that support HSF courses.
